Wire gauge for load and distance
The minimum wire gauge specified by code is based on the breaker size — but that minimum assumes a short run. Permit requirement
Any new circuit in Arizona that requires a permit gets one. Most new circuit installations in a finished home don't require a permit for minor work (adding an outlet to an existing circuit), but dedicated circuits for high-draw equipment, 240V circuits, EV charger circuits, and any work involving the panel do require a permit in most Valley jurisdictions. Common Electrical Run Jobs We Handle
Kitchen dedicated circuits
Modern kitchens routinely exceed the capacity of a single circuit. The NEC requires dedicated circuits for refrigerators and dishwashers in new construction, and recommends (in many jurisdictions requires) at least two 20-amp small appliance circuits for countertop outlets. Older homes built before these requirements were standard often have everything on one or two kitchen circuits — the result is tripped breakers whenever multiple appliances run simultaneously. We run the circuits that bring the kitchen up to current standards without a full renovation.
Home office circuits
A serious home office with multiple monitors, a workstation, a laser printer, and a UPS unit can draw 1,500 to 2,000 watts continuously. Attic temperatures and wire routing
Arizona's 140°F+ summer attic temperatures are a real factor in electrical routing. NEC wire ampacity ratings are based on ambient temperature — wire rated for a 90°C insulation temperature can carry less current continuously when it's running through a 140°F attic. For circuits in Arizona attic spaces, we use wire rated for high ambient temperatures (THHN/THWN-2 at minimum) and avoid bundling multiple circuits together in a way that adds thermal load. This matters on high-draw circuits like EV chargers and AC equipment circuits that run in attic spaces.
Underground runs and caliche
Installing underground conduit on East Valley and North Valley properties means dealing with caliche — the hardened calcium carbonate layer that makes trenching more difficult and time-consuming than in other parts of the country. Yes — though attic access makes runs cleaner and faster. In finished spaces without attic access (second floors with living space above, concrete slab construction), we route through wall cavities, use surface-mounted EMT conduit in appropriate locations, or fish wire through walls using low-voltage drill bits and fish tape. What's the right wire gauge for my run?
It depends on the breaker size and the run length. A 20-amp circuit requires minimum 12 AWG wire — but if the run is 100 feet, we may upsize to 10 AWG to keep voltage drop within acceptable limits. A 50-amp EV charger circuit requires minimum 6 AWG for shorter runs and may need 4 AWG for longer ones. We calculate this for every job.
My garage is far from my panel — will that affect cost?
Distance affects the amount of wire and conduit needed and may require upsizing the wire gauge for voltage drop. A 20-foot run and a 60-foot run cost meaningfully different amounts of material. We walk the route before quoting so the estimate reflects the actual job.
What's involved in running power to a detached structure?
Underground conduit or direct-burial cable from the house to the structure, at the correct burial depth (minimum 18" for conduit, 24" for direct burial cable in most applications).
