A circuit breaker is a safety device that automatically disconnects a circuit when current exceeds the breaker's rated capacity. It protects the wiring in your walls — which has a specific ampacity limit based on its gauge — from carrying more current than it was designed for. Overloaded wiring generates heat; heat that builds up inside a wall over time is a fire risk. The breaker's job is to interrupt the circuit before that happens.
Breakers fail in two directions:
Failing open (nuisance tripping)

Breaker that keeps tripping
The most common call. We start by identifying whether the circuit is actually overloaded (too many devices drawing too much current for the circuit's rating) or whether the breaker itself is failing. If the circuit is genuinely overloaded, the fix is either redistributing loads to other circuits or running a new dedicated circuit — not just replacing the breaker with a higher-rated one, which defeats the purpose of the protection. If the breaker is failing, we replace it with a correctly rated unit from a compatible brand.
Breaker that trips immediately on reset
Usually indicates a fault on the circuit — a short circuit (hot wire contacting neutral or ground) or a ground fault (current leaking to a grounded path). We trace the fault to its source before replacing anything. A short circuit that caused a trip will trip again immediately on reset until the fault is cleared.
Breaker that won't reset at all

Electrical arcing inside a panel — at a loose breaker connection, a damaged bus bar contact, or a faulty breaker — produces a distinctive buzzing or crackling sound. This is not a wait-and-see situation. Arcing generates heat and can damage surrounding components. We treat audible panel sounds as a same-day diagnostic call.
A burning smell from the panel or outlets
Shut off the main breaker and call us immediately. A burning smell indicates an electrical component overheating — it's a fire risk, not a normal operating condition. Don't attempt to reset breakers or investigate the panel yourself if you smell burning.
GFCI breaker that won't reset
GFCI breakers (the ones with TEST and RESET buttons, typically used in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor circuits) trip on ground faults — current leaking from the hot conductor to ground at a level too small to trip a standard breaker but large enough to indicate a fault path. A GFCI that won't reset usually means there's an active ground fault somewhere on the circuit. We find it before replacing the GFCI.
AFCI breaker nuisance trips
Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI breakers, now required in most rooms by NEC 2020) detect arcing conditions that standard breakers miss. - Replacement breaker installed — we use the correct replacement brand for your panel; breakers are not universally interchangeable across panel brands
- Connection verified — wire terminals confirmed tight, correct torque
- Main breaker on, circuit tested — we verify the replaced breaker operates correctly under load before the job is complete
Breaker brand compatibility matters
A Square D breaker doesn't belong in a Siemens panel. A Siemens breaker doesn't belong in an Eaton panel. Each panel manufacturer designs their bus bar to accept specific breaker designs — using a non-listed breaker in a panel creates a connection that isn't guaranteed to make proper contact with the bus bar, which can create arcing and heat at the connection point. We always use the correct listed replacement for your specific panel.
Tandem and half-size breakers
When a panel is out of available slots, tandem breakers (two circuits on one slot) are sometimes used to create additional capacity. Not every panel accepts tandem breakers in every slot — the panel's load center label specifies which slots accept them and which don't. We check the panel's labeling before installing any tandem breaker. Oversized-panel slot listings are sometimes the source of code violations on older panels that have been modified without following the panel's labeling.
Arizona-Specific Concerns
Heat stress on breakers
Arizona's extreme summer temperatures affect panel components in ways that moderate climates don't. Panels on exterior garage walls — common in East Valley construction — can reach ambient temperatures of 110°F+ in summer. Breakers operating at those temperatures run closer to their thermal trip thresholds, which contributes to nuisance tripping during peak summer heat. A breaker that trips reliably in July but never in October may not be a faulty breaker — it may be a panel location issue worth addressing with ventilation or relocation.
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels
These panels — installed widely in Valley homes from the 1960s through the 1980s — have documented breaker failure modes where the breaker doesn't trip under overload. If you have either brand, we'll tell you directly. Breaker replacement within these panels is not recommended as a long-term solution because the bus bar design and breaker retention mechanism are the source of the concern — a new breaker in a Stab-Lok panel still uses the same retention system. Panel replacement is the recommended resolution.
AC system electrical loads
Arizona AC systems run 10 to 14 hours per day in summer — a continuous load that stresses circuits and breakers more than equivalent equipment in moderate climates. The AC breaker and the wiring feeding the outdoor condenser unit are worth including in any panel safety check, particularly on systems that have been running for 15+ years.

What's the difference between a GFCI breaker and a standard breaker?
A standard breaker trips on overcurrent — too many amps on the circuit.
