What's in Arizona's Water — And Why It Matters

Understanding what's actually in your water determines what treatment makes sense. Arizona homeowners typically deal with a combination of:

Hardness (calcium and magnesium)

The primary issue across the Valley. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) — anything above 7 GPG is classified as hard. Most of the Phoenix metro runs between 12 and 22 GPG depending on your city, water source, and time of year. That's nearly double to triple the "hard" threshold. Hard water deposits mineral scale inside pipes, water heaters, tankless units, dishwashers, washing machines, and faucet aerators. Chlorine and chloramines

Municipal water systems treat water with chlorine or chloramines (chlorine + ammonia) to kill bacteria. Both are safe at treatment levels but produce taste and odor that most homeowners notice, particularly in drinking water and when showering. Chloramines are harder to remove than chlorine — they require specific filtration media (catalytic carbon) rather than standard carbon block.

Total dissolved solids (TDS)

A broad measure of everything dissolved in your water beyond hydrogen and oxygen — minerals, metals, salts, organic compounds. High TDS affects water taste and is the measurement that reverse osmosis systems most dramatically reduce.

PFAS and emerging contaminants

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — "forever chemicals" — have been detected in water supplies across Arizona at varying levels. Standard carbon filtration reduces some PFAS; reverse osmosis removes them more effectively. If PFAS in drinking water is a concern, an RO system under the kitchen sink is the most reliable residential solution.

Sediment

Particularly relevant for homes on private wells or at the end of long municipal distribution lines. Fine sand, rust particles, and sediment from aging pipes can be addressed with a whole-home sediment pre-filter upstream of other treatment equipment.

A salt-based ion exchange water softener is the most effective solution for removing calcium and magnesium hardness from Arizona water. It's installed on your main supply line — after the meter and PRV, before your water heater and house supply branches — and treats every drop of water that enters your home. Reverse Osmosis (RO) Drinking Water System

A reverse osmosis system installs under your kitchen sink and produces purified drinking water at a dedicated faucet — and typically connects to the refrigerator ice maker and water dispenser as well. RO systems use a semi-permeable membrane to remove dissolved solids, heavy metals, nitrates, chlorine byproducts, PFAS, fluoride, and other contaminants to a degree that no whole-home filtration system can match. The result is water that tastes significantly better than municipal supply and is as clean as bottled water at a fraction of the ongoing cost.

A 5- or 6-stage RO system is the most common residential configuration. Most systems require filter changes annually and membrane replacement every 2 to 3 years — we handle that service as part of our A-Team Maintenance Club or as a standalone visit.

Important pairing note: A water softener upstream of an RO system protects the RO membrane from hard water mineral fouling, extending membrane life significantly. If you're installing both, they're designed to work together — softener first, RO at the point of use.

Whole-Home Carbon Filtration

A whole-home carbon filtration system installs at the point of entry and treats all water entering the house — reducing chlorine, chloramines, sediment, and taste and odor issues at every tap. Unlike a water softener, carbon filtration does not remove hardness minerals. Most Arizona homeowners benefit from both: a softener for hardness, a carbon filter for chlorine and taste.

We install catalytic carbon systems specifically rated for chloramine removal — important in Arizona, where many municipal systems have switched from chlorine to chloramines in recent years. Standard carbon block media does not remove chloramines effectively; catalytic carbon does.

Salt-Free Water Conditioning

Salt-free conditioners use a physical process (typically Template Assisted Crystallization or Nucleation Assisted Crystallization) to change the structure of hardness minerals so they're less likely to adhere to pipe and appliance surfaces. They do not remove hardness minerals from the water — the calcium and magnesium remain, but in a form that passes through rather than depositing as scale.

Salt-free systems are appropriate for homeowners who want reduced scale without the salt use, water waste from regeneration, or sodium increase associated with traditional ion exchange softeners. They're particularly useful for households on septic systems where brine discharge is a concern, and for HOAs or communities with salt-restriction ordinances. They are not the same as a true water softener and perform differently — we'll give you an honest comparison for your specific situation.

Combination Systems (Softener + Carbon Filtration)

For whole-home treatment that addresses both hardness and chlorine/taste issues, a combination system — water softener plus whole-home carbon filtration — installed on the main line provides comprehensive treatment at every tap. This is the most common whole-home water treatment configuration we install in the East Valley.

Point-of-Use Systems

In addition to whole-home treatment, we install under-sink RO systems, dedicated drinking water faucets, and refrigerator line connections. Point-of-use systems are the right solution for purified drinking water regardless of whether the home has whole-home softening.

The Loop Installation — What Most Plumbers Skip

A water softener or whole-home filter requires a "loop" — a dedicated plumbing configuration on the main supply line that routes water through the treatment equipment, includes a bypass valve, and returns treated water to the house supply. Many older homes don't have a pre-installed loop; some homes have a partial loop that was roughed in during construction but never connected.

Installing or completing a loop is a plumbing job — it requires cutting into the main supply line, installing fittings, running copper or PEX, and connecting the bypass valve and drain. This is work that a water treatment specialist without a plumbing license may not be able to perform legally in Arizona.

A softener upstream of your water heater dramatically reduces scale accumulation inside both tank and tankless units — the primary cause of shortened water heater lifespan in Arizona. We install both services and understand how the two interact. The correct installation order is: meter → PRV → softener → water heater → house supply. When we install a softener, we verify the water heater connection is in the right position and flag anything that's out of order.

A PRV should be installed upstream of the water softener. Softened water flowing back through a PRV can accelerate diaphragm wear. If your home has an aging PRV, we'll check it during a water conditioning install — often it makes sense to replace the PRV at the same visit rather than creating a second scheduling event.

A tankless water heater without a water softener upstream will accumulate scale inside the heat exchanger within 18 to 24 months in the Valley's hard water environment. If you have a tankless unit, a water softener is the single best thing you can do to extend its life and maintain its efficiency. We install both and can coordinate them in the same visit or as planned sequential installs.

We don't recommend water treatment systems without testing your water first. On every water conditioning assessment call we:

Water softening specifically refers to the removal of calcium and magnesium hardness minerals from water through ion exchange — the minerals are physically removed. Water conditioning is a broader term that can include softening, filtration, reverse osmosis, and salt-free scale-reduction systems. We use "water conditioning" as the umbrella term for all water treatment services; when we say softener, we mean a true ion exchange system that removes hardness minerals.

Do I need a water softener if I'm on city water in the Phoenix Valley?

Almost certainly yes, if scale protection and appliance lifespan matter to you. The Valley's municipal water hardness ranges from 12 to 22 GPG across different cities — well into the "very hard" to "extremely hard" range regardless of source. The only way to know your exact level is to test it, which we do on every assessment call.

What's the difference between a water softener and a reverse osmosis system?

A water softener treats all the water entering your home and removes hardness minerals. It protects your pipes, appliances, and fixtures from scale but does not purify drinking water to the same standard as RO. A reverse osmosis system treats water at the point of use (typically the kitchen sink) and removes a much broader range of dissolved contaminants including PFAS, heavy metals, nitrates, and TDS — but only at that one outlet. Most Arizona homeowners benefit from both: a softener for whole-home protection, an RO system for drinking water.

How long does installation take?

Do I need to soften my outdoor irrigation water?

No — and you shouldn't. Softened water introduces sodium into soil, which can affect plants and lawn health over time. We install a bypass valve on every softener so outdoor hose bibs and irrigation draw from unsoftened supply.

Can a water softener hurt my septic system?

Modern demand-initiated softeners that regenerate only when needed produce significantly less brine discharge than older timer-based systems. Current research generally supports compatibility between properly sized modern softeners and healthy septic systems. If you have a septic system we'll discuss your specific situation. Salt-free conditioning is an alternative that produces no brine discharge at all.

What maintenance do water conditioning systems need?

Salt-based softeners need salt refilled every 4 to 8 weeks and a periodic resin cleaning if iron fouling occurs. RO systems need filter changes annually and membrane replacement every 2 to 3 years. Carbon filtration systems need media replacement every 3 to 5 years depending on water volume and quality.
