Aluminum Wiring Repair & Remediation

If your Phoenix-area home was built between 1965 and 1975, there's a real chance the branch circuits are aluminum. Here's what that means and how it gets fixed properly.

During a copper price spike in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a great many homes were wired with small-gauge aluminum branch circuits. Plenty of those homes are still standing across Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale, and Sun City, and plenty still have the original wiring behind the walls.

The wire itself isn't the hazard. The connections are — and they get worse with every heating and cooling cycle. Remediation is a known, solvable problem with recognized methods, and it does not require tearing your house apart.

Warning signs that need attention now

  • Outlet or switch cover plates that are warm to the touch
  • A burning, fishy, or hot-plastic smell near a device
  • Scorch marks or discoloration on a receptacle or plate
  • Lights on one circuit that flicker or dim without an obvious cause
  • Outlets that work intermittently or have stopped entirely
  • Breakers tripping on circuits carrying normal, moderate load

1. Inspection and inventory

We confirm whether the branch wiring is actually aluminum, map which circuits are affected, and count every device that needs treatment. You get a written inventory and a fixed price — not an hourly meter running behind your walls.

2. Listed pigtail connections at every device

At each receptacle, switch, fixture, and junction, we terminate the aluminum conductor into a connector listed for aluminum-to-copper transitions with an oxide-inhibiting compound, and land a copper pigtail on the device. The device termination is then copper, which is what devices are designed for.

3. Device replacement where warranted

Devices that show heat damage get replaced, not reused. In many homes this is also the sensible moment to add GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, and exteriors, and AFCI protection where the panel supports it.

4. Panel evaluation

Homes of this era frequently pair aluminum branch wiring with a panel that has its own problems — Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco among them. We check the panel while we're there and tell you plainly whether it belongs in the same conversation.

5. Documentation for your insurer and your file

A written scope of what was remediated, the method used, and the device count. That's the paperwork underwriters and future buyers ask for.

Remediate or rewire?

Pigtail remediation

Far less invasive and far less expensive. No drywall demolition, typically completed in days rather than weeks, and it addresses the failure mode directly. This is the right choice for the large majority of homes.

Full rewire

Definitive, and worth considering if you're already doing a major remodel with walls open, if the home has undersized service and a failing panel anyway, or if the existing wiring has been extensively and badly modified over decades. We'll price both when both are reasonable.

How do I know if my home has aluminum branch wiring?

Homes built roughly between 1965 and 1975 are the risk window. The cable jacket is often printed with 'AL' or 'ALUMINUM' — check at the panel or at an accessible junction in the attic or garage. Do not open outlets to look if you're not qualified. The reliable answer is an electrician's inspection, and it's also what a home inspector or insurer will want. Note this applies to small-gauge branch circuits; the large aluminum service entrance conductors feeding many panels are a normal, accepted installation and are not the concern.

Why is aluminum branch wiring a fire risk?

Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with heating and cooling cycles, which loosens terminations over time. It also oxidizes, and aluminum oxide is a poor conductor, so resistance rises at the connection. Higher resistance means more heat, which means more expansion, which means a looser connection — a self-worsening cycle that ends at a device terminal inside a wall box. The failures happen at connections, not in the middle of the wire run.

What are the accepted repair methods?

The two remediation approaches with recognized standing are COPALUM crimping, which requires a special tool and a certified installer, and AlumiConn connectors, which are listed for aluminum-to-copper transitions and use a set-screw design with an inhibitor compound. Both work by pigtailing a short copper lead onto the aluminum conductor at every device so the actual device termination is copper. Full rewiring is the definitive fix and the most expensive.

Can't I just use wire nuts rated for aluminum?

Standard twist-on connectors are not an accepted remediation for aluminum branch wiring, even purple ones sold as dual-rated. This is one of the areas where the cheap approach genuinely isn't equivalent, and insurance carriers who ask about aluminum wiring generally won't accept it as remediation. We use listed connectors and document what we installed.

Do I need to remediate every outlet, or just some?

Every one. The risk lives at terminations, so partial remediation leaves the exact hazard you were paying to remove.
