There's almost always one space in an Arizona home that the central system was never designed to handle: the converted garage, the casita out back, the bonus room over the garage, the west-facing office that hits 84°F by 3 p.m. while the rest of the house sits at 75°F. Extending ductwork into those spaces is expensive, disruptive, and frequently doesn't fix the problem anyway.
A ductless mini-split solves it directly. An outdoor inverter condenser, a small refrigerant line set through the wall, and an indoor head with its own thermostat — conditioning that room independently of the rest of the house, on its own schedule, at its own temperature.
Where mini-splits earn their keep in Arizona

How we size and install
Load calculation, not a rule of thumb
Square footage alone is a bad predictor in Arizona. West exposure, glazing area, ceiling height, insulation, and whether the space shares a wall with a 140°F garage all move the number substantially. We run the load, then choose capacity — oversizing a mini-split is a real problem, because an oversized inverter short-cycles at low load and leaves the room clammy during monsoon season.
Line-set routing you won't hate looking at
The line set carries refrigerant, condensate, and control wiring from the condenser to the head. Sloppy routing means a stucco wall with a fat white duct stapled across it. We plan the route first — interior chase, attic, or a painted line-hide that follows an architectural line — and we discuss it with you before we drill anything.
Electrical done properly
Most mini-splits need a dedicated circuit and a service disconnect within sight of the condenser. Our electricians handle that in-house on the same job, so you're not coordinating two trades and two visits. If your panel is full or is a known-problem brand, we'll tell you before the job, not on install day.
Commissioning is where the lifespan comes from
We pull a deep vacuum and hold it, verify the micron level, torque flare connections to spec, weigh in any additional charge for line-set length, and record superheat and subcooling. Most premature mini-split failures in this valley trace back to moisture or non-condensables left in a line set that was never properly evacuated.
Choosing between a mini-split and extending the central system
When the mini-split wins
The space is detached, unconditioned, or used on a different schedule than the rest of the house; the existing system has no spare tonnage; or running new duct means opening finished ceilings. In those cases ductless is cheaper, faster, and more efficient to run.
When it doesn't
If several connected rooms are all underperforming, the real problem is usually duct leakage or an undersized return — not missing equipment. Adding a mini-split to a house with 25% duct loss is treating a symptom. We'd rather test the ducts first and tell you that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a mini-split really cool a Phoenix garage in July?
Yes, if it's sized and prepped correctly. An uninsulated garage with a west-facing door radiating 140°F surface heat is a load problem before it's an equipment problem. We calculate the load, and in most cases we recommend insulating the garage door and sealing the attic access at the same time. A properly sized inverter mini-split — typically 1 to 1.5 tons for a two-car garage — will hold a workable temperature through a July afternoon. A unit sized off a rule of thumb usually won't.
How much does a ductless mini-split cost to install in the Valley?
Cost depends on capacity, the number of indoor heads, how far the line set has to run, and whether a dedicated circuit already exists. A single-zone system in a garage or casita with a short line set and an available panel slot is the low end; a multi-zone system feeding three or four rooms with long runs and a panel upgrade is several times that. We quote flat-rate after looking at the actual space — we don't price mini-splits over the phone, because the electrical is where the surprises live.
Do mini-splits qualify for the SRP rebate?
Inverter-driven ductless mini-splits are listed in SRP's Cool Cash program at the top tier — $225 per ton — provided the equipment is AHRI-listed at 15.2 SEER2 or higher and the space is habitable. That last part matters: SRP excludes installations serving garages and other non-habitable spaces. A converted casita or a finished bonus room qualifies; a working garage generally doesn't. Can one outdoor unit run several rooms?
Yes. Multi-zone systems run two to five indoor heads off a single condenser, each with its own thermostat. The tradeoff is that multi-zone units modulate less gracefully than single-zone at very low load, and one failed condenser takes every zone offline. When rooms have genuinely different schedules, multi-zone is the right call. When it's really one big space, one bigger head is usually the better system.
Do mini-splits heat too?
Nearly all of them do — they're heat pumps. In Phoenix-area winters a mini-split heats a garage, casita, or addition far more cheaply than resistance heat, and it does it without adding a gas line. That's often the deciding factor for detached workshops.
How much maintenance does a mini-split need?
More than people expect. The washable filters need rinsing monthly during heavy use, and the blower wheel and drain pan need a proper cleaning annually — dust and biofilm build up inside the head and cause both the musty smell and the water drips people blame on the installer.
