A heat pump is the same machine as your air conditioner with one extra part: a reversing valve that lets it move heat into the house in winter instead of out of it. For all-electric Phoenix-area homes, that means one system, one outdoor unit, one maintenance plan, and no gas appliance to worry about.

The reason heat pump installs go wrong isn't the technology. It's sizing, duct capacity, and commissioning. We handle all three the same way on every job, and we put the numbers in writing.

How we spec the system

Sizing: the number that determines everything else

We run a Manual J. If the answer is smaller than what's currently installed, we'll say so — and we'll explain why a right-sized variable-capacity system running long, low-speed cycles will feel better and cost less than the oversized unit it replaces. Oversizing is the most common defect we find in Valley homes and it's the root of both the humidity complaints and the premature compressor failures.

Stage and efficiency tier

Single-stage is the cheapest to install and the crudest to live with. Two-stage handles part-load conditions far better. Variable-capacity modulates continuously, holds temperature within a degree, dehumidifies properly during monsoon, and lands at the top SRP rebate tier. We price two or three tiers side by side with real operating-cost math so you can decide, rather than being sold the top of the line by default.

Ductwork gets tested, not assumed

Putting a high-efficiency heat pump on ductwork that leaks a quarter of its air into a 160°F attic wastes most of what you paid for. We measure static pressure and check for leakage before finalizing the proposal, and if the ducts are the actual problem we'll tell you that before you buy equipment you may not need.

Installation day

Permits and inspection

We pull the permit. A contractor who suggests skipping it is telling you something about how the rest of the job will go — and an unpermitted change-out can complicate a future home sale and void manufacturer warranty support.

Commissioning and documentation

Before we leave: vacuum verified to spec, charge weighed in for line-set length, superheat and subcooling recorded, temperature split measured at the registers, and every reading written on the invoice. You get the AHRI certificate, the Manual J, the warranty registration, and the rebate package.

Warranty and what comes after

Manufacturer parts warranties are registered by us on your behalf — unregistered equipment often drops from ten years to five. Maintenance Club members get twice-yearly service that keeps the warranty valid and catches capacitor and contactor degradation before a July failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a heat pump make sense in Phoenix?

It makes more sense here than almost anywhere. A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse, so you get the same cooling performance you'd get from a straight AC plus efficient winter heating from the same box. Our winters rarely stay below the temperature where a heat pump loses its efficiency advantage, so the auxiliary heat strips seldom run. For all-electric homes without a gas line, a heat pump is generally the lowest total-cost option.

Heat pump or AC-plus-gas-furnace?

If you already have gas service and a functioning furnace with life left in it, replacing just the condenser and coil is usually the cheaper move. If your home is all-electric, if the furnace is also at end of life, or if you're chasing the SRP rebate at the heat pump tier, a heat pump is typically the better long-term system. We'll price both and show you the operating-cost math rather than steering you.

How much does heat pump installation cost in the Valley?

The spread is wide because the job is wide: tonnage, single-stage versus variable-capacity, whether the existing air handler and line set can be reused, whether the electrical service can support it, and how bad the duct condition is. What we won't do is quote a number before we've seen your equipment and run the load. Every proposal we hand you is flat-rate with the scope written out, and we show the rebate and financing math on the same page.

What size heat pump do I need?

Whatever the Manual J load calculation says — not whatever is on the old nameplate. A large share of Valley homes are running oversized equipment installed by someone who matched the last unit's tonnage. Oversized systems cool the air fast, shut off before they've dehumidified, and short-cycle their way to an early compressor failure. We measure the envelope, the glazing, the orientation, and the duct capacity, and we'll tell you if your existing ductwork can't move the air a larger system would need.

Do heat pumps qualify for SRP Cool Cash?

Yes. SRP pays per ton on qualifying heat pumps: $75 per ton single-stage, $150 per ton multi-stage, and $225 per ton variable-capacity, on AHRI-listed equipment at 15.2 SEER2 or higher. Applications must be submitted within six months of installation and we can file on your behalf. How long does a heat pump last in Arizona?

Ten to fifteen years is realistic here, versus fifteen to twenty in milder climates. Our systems run a brutal duty cycle from May through September, and hard water, dust, and monsoon debris all shorten equipment life. Twice-yearly maintenance — coil cleaning, refrigerant charge verification, electrical inspection, and capacitor testing — is the single biggest factor in whether you get twelve years or seven.

Will my electric bill go up or down?

Down in winter, and down in summer relative to whatever you're replacing if the old system was ten-plus years old and single-stage. The realistic comparison is against your own current system, not a manufacturer's brochure number: a 20-year-old 10-SEER unit running at degraded capacity can easily use twice the power of a modern variable-capacity system doing the same work.
