Kill the mold and biofilm where it actually grows — on the wet evaporator coil inside your air handler — instead of masking the smell downstream.

The musty smell that hits when the AC starts is not coming from your ducts. It's coming from a coil that stays wet every time the system runs, coated in the dust that got past your filter. That's a growth medium, and in monsoon season it's a very good one.

UV-C germicidal lamps and whole-home air scrubbers address that directly. Installed at the coil and in the plenum, they keep the surface clean, keep heat transfer efficient, and stop the smell at the source.

Consider coil treatment if

  • The house smells musty for the first minute after the system cycles on
  • You've had duct cleaning and the odor came back within weeks
  • There's visible growth on the coil, in the pan, or at the plenum
  • Someone in the home has asthma, COPD, or significant mold sensitivity

What we install

UV-C coil lamps

Mounted inside the air handler cabinet to irradiate the coil face continuously. Sized and positioned for your cabinet — placement matters more than lamp wattage, and a lamp aimed at the wrong surface is decoration. Ozone-free lamps only.

Whole-home air scrubbers

Installed in the supply plenum to treat air as it circulates, targeting odors, VOCs, and airborne microbials throughout the house rather than just the coil surface. A good fit for homes with pets, smokers, recent remodels, or persistent kitchen odor.

High-capacity media filtration

Often the missing piece. A 4- or 5-inch MERV 11–13 media cabinet catches vastly more than a 1-inch fiberglass filter without choking airflow the way a restrictive 1-inch pleated filter does. We verify static pressure after any filtration change — a filter that starves the blower does more harm than the dust it caught.

Drain and pan service

Half the odor complaints we chase are a slow or biofilm-clogged condensate line and a standing pan. We clear the line, treat the pan, verify the float switch works, and check the slope. Cheapest fix on this page and often the whole answer.

How we diagnose before we sell

We look at the coil

Panel comes off, coil and pan get inspected and photographed. If the coil is filthy, the first recommendation is a proper chemical cleaning — then UV to keep it that way. Installing a lamp over an already-fouled coil is putting a lid on the problem.

We check the return side

A leaky return in a hot, dusty attic pulls unfiltered attic air straight into the system. No purifier compensates for that. If we find it, sealing the return comes first.

Why does my AC smell musty when it first kicks on?

Almost always biological growth on the evaporator coil or in the condensate pan. The coil is wet whenever the system runs, and in monsoon humidity it stays wet. Dust that gets past the filter sticks to that wet surface and becomes food. When the blower starts, the first slug of air across that coil carries the smell into the house. Fragrance and duct cleaning don't fix it because the source is the coil.

What does a UV-C light actually do?

A properly placed UV-C lamp irradiates the coil surface continuously, preventing mold and bacterial biofilm from establishing there. That's its real, well-supported job: keeping the coil clean. A clean coil also holds its heat-transfer efficiency, so the system moves more heat for the same power. Claims that a coil lamp sterilizes the air passing by at duct velocity are overstated — air moves past too fast for meaningful dose. We sell it for what it does.

Air scrubber or UV light — what's the difference?

A UV-C coil light treats a surface. A whole-home air scrubber or photocatalytic unit is installed in the supply plenum and treats air moving through the system, targeting odors and VOCs as well as microbials. Many homes benefit most from both: the lamp keeps the coil clean, the scrubber addresses odor and airborne contaminants. If your complaint is smell, we start by finding whether the source is the coil, the drain, the ducts, or something in the house.

How often do UV bulbs need replacing?

Typically annually. UV-C lamps keep glowing well past the point where their germicidal output has dropped below useful intensity — a lamp that looks fine can be doing nothing. Replacement is part of Maintenance Club visits so it doesn't quietly lapse.

Will this help with allergies and dust?

Partly, and honestly: coil treatment reduces mold spore load and odor, which helps some people significantly. But the biggest lever for dust and allergens in a Valley home is filtration and duct sealing — a MERV 11–13 media filter in a properly sized cabinet, plus sealing the return side so the system stops pulling attic air. We'd rather sell you the filter cabinet and the sealing first if that's what your house needs.

Are UV systems safe?

Installed correctly, yes — the lamp sits inside the sealed air handler cabinet with an interlock or a service-visible warning, and there is no UV exposure in living space. We install ozone-free UV-C. If a product's marketing leans on generating ozone as a feature, that's a reason to avoid it in an occupied home.
